This is a monumental announcement for all at Féach who have been working on this for 4 years. A campaign that was started by Niamh Kilcawley, a blind student, when she was sitting her Junior Certificate. Niamh will be sitting her Leaving Certificate today and she will finally get the extra time she needs.
It is a pilot project for students with Vision Impairment for this year, but what we are seeing is a new level of understanding from State Exam Commission and a great dialogue happening between all involved.
Along with Niamh we have to thank Vision Ireland Children and Young Persons team, especially Toni O’Dwyer for getting stuck in and helping us push this elephant up the hill. For the IHREC Comms for requesting the review that resulted in the change. What a great team!
“On a pilot basis for the 2025 examinations, additional time for vision impaired candidates is being increased to 15 minutes per hour (or part of an hour) for all examinations; Junior Cycle, Leaving Certificate Applied and Leaving Certificate. This increases the additional time to between 25% and 38% of the total examination duration.” SEC to schools.
