We are aware of a few condition specific groups and organisations operating in Ireland - Anne Sullivan Centre, Ushers & Albinism Fellowship. Parents, are there any others we need to know about or that you would like other families to know about? Post any details below. It can be really helpful for parents and children to meet others just like them!

A huge WELCOME to all our new members this year. We try to Facebook Message each new member on approval, this might fall into the FB version of spam so please check your messages if you haven't heard from us yet!
Emailing info@feach.ie will get you on our mailing list and is a great way to get in touch too if you have any queries. We have lots of information, advice and leaflets available relative to the age of your child, where they are in their school life, assistive technology options and many more topics!!!

!!!!!!!!Finally!!!!!!!! So under 12s with a high prescription -/+ 5 are entitled to 50% refund on the cost of their glasses in most HSE areas called CHOs. We are only -/+3 but in certain parts of the lenses we are -3 & another -3.
Your optician should be familiar with the LOA/2 forms which entitles all children under 12 to 51€ off their glasses. They also need to send a cover letter using the template and wording attached (HSE seem to be sticklers for this) plus a copy of the prescription.
Then the HSE will send the optician back those 3 pieces of paper plus a 4th slip of paper and a Purchase Order Number. Then your refund can be processed.
Some opticians know about this, some don't. My hopes is now parents can inform their optician of what to do. Feel free to use these images below. My optician never had to do this before so we were both learning.
If you no approved for the refund, this can be argued. Some parents have won when they found out their district didn't offer it, but their last county of residence did, some have won as a private patient as it used to be just for HSE opticians.
I'm disgusted by all the money we have spend over the years on glasses and after 11 years this is the first time I got the refund.

We've had a question in relation to Health Insurance Providers - Can anyone recommend an insurer for an adult with VI who might at some point need surgery for the condition. They had 1 surgery in the past that VHI refused to fund. Many thanks Aoife Kearney Conor Kostick Rebecca Kerr Christina Kelly Eithne Walsh

We’re with VHI and they’ve always covered for us even without prior approval as our retina surgeries have been urgent. No fancy plan just the basic I think it’s One Family Plus for the kids surgery and One Family for my surgery. I’ve been with same ins…

It depends on the level of cover of the plan the person had. The more basic plans cover life saving emergencies and part of some day to day things. But they might not cover private elective surgery if public is available.
Currently we are covered unde…

Hi everyone we are moving back to Ireland in September from the US. MY son who was 1 in June was diagnosed at 4 months with oculocutaneous albinism type 1. He has been doing PT, OT and vision therapy once a week here since February and I am trying to get something similar set up for him in Ireland. We have an appointment late September with Vision Ireland for an assessment but I suspect he will still need OT and PT when we get back to Dublin. Would anyone have recommendations…

Childvision wouldnt offer huge support as they mainly deal with children with multiple disabilities, but no harm asking for an assesment. The services here would not offer what you have in the US. im not sure if OT and PT are always necessary, we wen…

📚 We're thrilled to announce our latest resource for Children's Emotional Well-being: “Things I Love About School” by Trace Moroney, now available in Braille and audio formats! This heartwarming book helps children embrace the positive aspects of school and is perfect for easing back-to-school jitters. As summer winds down, many parents are navigating their children’s anxieties about school. Our Book Bridge Project offers a range of resources to support emotional health, including: - “Badger’s Parting Gifts” by Susan Varley: Helps children cope with the loss of an older relative. - “The Heart and the Bottle” by Oliver Jeffers: Explores themes of love and loss. - “The Invisible String” by Geoff Stevenson: A comforting story about staying connected even when apart. These resources are available through Vision Ireland’s Library Services. For more information or to access these books, please get in touch with us at Library@vi.ie.
