Help with contact lenses

Just wondering if anyone has any experience of using contact lenses - tips on putting contact lenses in with toddlers/preschoolers, how did they adjust to them, were they beneficial etc?

Just started them with my daughter 2 and 1/2 yrs old and we’re finding ir really hard putting them in and they’re always falling out so we’re not sure if they’re still in or not. She’s been wearing glasses for a year but contacts have been recommended because she is severely mypoic and the glasses need to be so thick that they distort colours and make the image very small which is hard when she has limited vision already. Apparently the image isn’t smaller with lenses and she will have a wider field of vision.
The plan is to keep using the glasses for preschool, doing jigsawas etc but with lenses for outside activities like playground where she’d benefit from an unrestricted visual field. She has better peripheral vision so I guess this is important.

We’ve had several visits at opticians but still struggling a bit. She’s learning to tolerate the insertion much better but it can still be very distressing for her some days when we’re fiddling around for ages. I have VI also so find it hard to see them so her Dad is doing it mostly atm but I’ll have to learn to do them myself eventually.

Any advice would be appreciated?

hi,

just passing on the details of a company i recently got eye patches from. they are american

http://funeyepatchkitsforkids.com/

the patches are all different colors and you can get stickers for doing them up. the prices worked out very good against buying the other ones from the chemist. my daughter has just started patching and their service was excellent.

just a little something that might make putting on patches easier.

We were refused DCA for our daughter who has a visual impairment as well as mild hearing impairment and low muscle tone (hypotonia). She’s a bit delayed in her motor skills and language, probably because of the hypotonia and hearing problems. I think VI is her primary disability. Does anyone else receive DCA with respect to a VI. We’re appealing the decision but I’m not sure whether we’re not entitled to it for a VI or whether there’s been lack of clarity about the rules since it moved from HSE to DSFA?

incapacitated child tax credit

just wonering have many of you applied for or recieved this tax credit? the information about it seems to say that ‘blindness’ qualifies but you need a letter from your consultant that must state that the child would be unable to maintain themselves. now to me if a child is blind with no other disability they should be able to maintain themselves? i do think we are entitiled to claim the tax credit but just curious if this line in the information booklet has put you off. it has me.

Hi,
My son and daughter are both VI, 6 and 9 years of age. Both tend to bend their neck forward trying to see stuff I have noticed latley that they are leaving their neck in this position. Apart from it being bad for their posture it doesnt look great.
Has anyone any advice on how to correct this without always correcting them? My son got a crick in his neck at the weekend does this go with the teritory? I assume if they keep this position up longterm it will lead to other back problems when they are older. I assume their too young for chiropractor?
Any advice anyone?

Hi,

I am visually impaired myself (cataracts) and my daughter inherited my cataracts. just wondering if there are many parents out there with a visual impairment that also have a visually impaired child. Do you find that you understand your child better because you know what they are going through? how do you think things have changed since you were young?

For me i grew up in a house where my parents were both blind. they both have guide dogs and myself and my brother had cataracts. The ‘blind’ world is my world. My parents were great and i went to mainstream school all the way. i got help if and when i needed it and always enouraged to try anything.

now i have a little girl and she has cataracts and all i seem to do is fight for her to get anything. i know from experience how important it is to access services to be ‘in the system’ and i hope that she will be able to go to mainstream school. just wondering is it because i know what it is like that i find ‘having’ to fight for services hard or does every parent which a child with a visual impairment feel the same?

HI,

Just wondering if anyone out there has any advice. My ten year old son has ocular albinism and is doing really well, but sometimes I worry about secondary school. He has a computer and camera in school which is great but since he went back in Sept I find he is less happy to use it, tho he needs it badly as he cant read the board from more than 2 feet away. Just wondering if any one has any advice on the dealing with childrens fears of being different etc. He was fine in school in the early years as I find children are a lot more accepting then.
